The workshop took place as a part of Material Matters, an exhibition hosted by the footwear and lifestyle brand at cultural space and design store 10 Corso Como. Fresh contemporary style with well-lit, open, and connected areas. In every way, the design concept of ECCO’s new studio space in Shanghai oozes collaboration and creativity. The studio houses a design hub of ECCO designers whose primary aspiration is to contribute to ECCO’s collections from the buzzing metropolis that is Shanghai. Zendoo is privately owned and runs on revenues from their production combined with public funds.

Ecco hosted a workshop during Milan design week inviting visitors to customise its latest leather innovations with natural dyes, as captured in a video produced for the brand by Dezeen. This is not your typical ECCO shoe - nevertheless, it is the result of a cooperation between Design School Kolding and ECCO. The outcome of this cooperation is a sneaker made 100% by reusable materials, the ECCO SEALO, which is nominated for a Danish Design Award.

In 1998 the first flagship retail store opened on Oxford Street, in London. By 2000, ECCO owned every step of the production process, from design and leather production to branded retail sales. While I enjoyed wearing the Citytray dress shoe and found it to be as comfortable as comparable dress shoes that I have owned previously, my only qualm with this shoe is that they felt slightly oversized. I suspect I would have been just fine with a sample a half size or full size down from my usual size.
Production
Although I only tested two of the brand’s mens footwear offerings, Ecco creates a wide range of men’s footwear options including dress and casual shoes, sandals, hiking shoes, sneakers, and golf shoes. The brand also carries a range of styles in women’s sizes, including dress shoes with low heels, sneakers, and more. Additionally, the brand also offers stylish footwear options in children’s sizes, meaning Ecco is a one-stop-shop for the entire family, no matter what your family looks like. The Biom 2.1 Low Tex sneaker is a comfortable pair of stylish sneakers. The design of the shoe features a mix of textiles that allow your feet to feel comfortable, protected, and light no matter the terrain.
And eventually, this happens to the vast majority of Zendoo’s employees. ECCO was established in 1963 by Karl Toosbuy in the small town of Bredebro in southern Denmark. Throughout the 1980s, the company expanded its operations internationally.
Zendoo’s products are handmade from e.g. surplus leather from ECCO’s production. It is a diverse group that fills the company’s production room in Kolding. Many young people feel the increasing pressure from society to perform, and some of them fall under the pressure and end up as a number in the statistics. But emotional pain can strike anyone at any given time, and the Danish design company opens the doors to all kinds of people. ECCO’s designer Ejnar Truelsen created the “JOKE”, followed by a series of other revolutionary shoes, some of which are still in production. ECCO owns tanneries in the Netherlands, Thailand, Indonesia and China.

Though I loved the modern design of the Biom 2.1 Low Tex sneaker, a major misstep is in the overt branding. Whenever possible, I opt for clothing, shoes, and accessories without excessive logos and branding. While the sneakers were comfortable and stylish, the large Ecco logo along the rubber piece on the back of the shoe meant that I only wore it with specific casual and exercise outfits. Although the Biom 2.1 Low Tex sneaker is available in 10 different vibrant colorways, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Ecco’s offerings. The brand currently has 228 different men’s shoe models available.

Even on longer walks, my feet felt well supported, and best of all, there was no break-in period. While the leather feels tough, I get the impression that they will soften over time. During their three years in business, Zendoo has experienced steady growth, and today approximately 9 people work for the design business. None of the employees work even close to full time, but even though the company has a production line to keep up, the two entrepreneurs find a way to make room for the newcomers on their terms. Many of the employees sew leather and textile products, while others are occupied in the company’s kitchen to prepare lunch for their colleagues. The startup business even has its own job consultants who bridge Zendoo with regular companies and pave the way for permanent jobs to employees who are ready to be part of a regular company.
The timeless quality, unpretentious and affordable designs set Baughman at the forefront of the California Modern movement. Approachable, elegant designs and clean shapes are some ways to describe mid-century modern furniture designer, Milo Baughmans’, pieces. His collaboration with various companies created what we know today as California Modern during the mid 20th Century.
